Choosing the Right Paint Color (Without Losing Your Mind)

Choosing the Right Paint Color

Choosing a paint color sounds simple… until you’re standing in the middle of a paint store staring at 47 shades of “white” and questioning everything. The truth is, the right color can completely transform a space—but the process to get there takes a little patience and a smart approach.

One of the best things you can do (and one of the cheapest) is take a quick trip to Dollar Tree and grab a few poster boards. Then head to your paint store—like Sherwin-Williams—and pick out a handful of samples you’re drawn to. Don’t overthink it at this stage—just go with what catches your eye.

When you get home, paint each poster board with your samples and hang them on the wall you’re planning to paint. This step is where the magic happens—but it’s also the part that feels like it takes forever. Be patient. Leave those samples up for at least a week. Watch how they look in the morning light, afternoon sun, and evening glow. Live with them.

Over time, you’ll notice something interesting: your eyes will naturally keep going back to one color. That’s your color. Trust it. Choose what makes you happy, not what feels “safe” or what you think you’re supposed to pick.

And here’s something most people don’t realize—you don’t have to settle for a color straight off the shelf. If it feels almost right but not quite, tweak it. Maybe it needs to be a little lighter, a little more gray, or slightly deeper. Don’t be afraid to mix. A touch of another tone can make it perfect. And I promise—the people at Sherwin-Williams are incredible at helping you get that exact shade dialed in.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to go bold. This is your home. If bright white makes your space feel fresh and calm, go for it. If a deep, moody blue makes your heart skip a beat—lean into it. The best spaces are the ones that reflect you and make you feel something every time you walk in.

At the end of the day, paint is one of the most powerful (and forgiving) design tools you have. So take your time, trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to take the leap.
