About The Little Blue Barn

Design Rooted in Real Life

Hi, I’m Karen — the heart behind The Little Blue Barn.

My story with design started long before I built my first piece of furniture. I grew up watching my mom design floral arrangements for weddings across San Diego. I can still remember the way her whole face would light up when she talked about color combinations, texture, and flow. I’d tag along to appointments, quietly observing as she guided brides through their visions. I learned how color tells a story before I ever knew what “design theory” meant.

Why The Little Blue Barn

I helped make pew bows, set up reception tables, and clean up in some of the most beautiful venues — all while watching creativity unfold right in front of me. She taught me to love color, embrace change, and never take no for an answer.

That foundation stayed with me.

Years later, The Little Blue Barn began with a little red bench I built from an old headboard. I painted it Red, loaded it into my truck to sell at a friend’s shop — and it sold before it ever made it inside. At that moment, I was hooked. I realized how much I loved taking something practical, adding color and character, and bringing excitement into someone’s home.

Long before I called this a business, I was cutting design inspiration from magazines, falling deep into the Pinterest rabbit hole, wandering the aisles of home improvement stores studying finishes, and never passing up a garage sale or estate sale. I’ve sat cross-legged on library floors surrounded by design, history, and culture books, completely losing track of time.

Design wasn’t a hobby. It was always part of me.

A Military Spouse Who Understands Real Moves

As a military spouse, I’ve experienced the fast pace of relocations, tight timelines, and getting homes market-ready with little notice. I’ve moved into new spaces wondering where to even start — and I’ve learned how to transform a home quickly and thoughtfully so it feels warm and welcoming from the moment you walk in.

Several moves taught me something powerful: a home doesn’t have to be perfect to feel meaningful. With intentional color, practical layout, and layered details, a space can feel warm and elevated — even on a deadline.

All of this unfolded while raising kids, rebuilding community with each move, and balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship. Those seasons shaped how I design: practical, functional, family-aware, and realistic.

Now Rooted in Monument

I spent years in vendor malls refinishing furniture, hunting for character-filled pieces, and blending old with new so spaces feel collected rather than cluttered. Along the way, I deepened my instincts through formal design coursework — and I’ve never stopped learning.

Now rooted in the Monument and Tri-Lakes community, I care deeply about being part of the village — supporting local families, investing in our schools, and helping homes feel intentional and welcoming.

The Little Blue Barn was built on curiosity, resilience, community, and a lifelong love of color. And I’d be honored to help you create a home that tells your story beautifully.

Why I Love Staging

“Staging is where design meets strategy.”

I love the challenge of walking into a home and seeing not just what it is — but what it could be in the eyes of a buyer. Staging isn’t about decorating. It’s about clarity. It’s about helping buyers instantly understand how a space functions, how it feels, and how they could live there.

There’s something powerful about transforming a lived-in home into a market-ready one without losing its warmth. I love editing, refining, repositioning, and watching a room suddenly breathe again.

Having experienced multiple military moves myself, I know what it feels like to prepare a home quickly and hope it stands out. Staging is my way of helping families move forward confidently — knowing they’ve presented their home at its absolute best.

Staging is part design, part psychology, and part storytelling. It’s about creating a first impression that lingers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does The Little Blue Barn take on clients outside of Colorado?2026-05-22T13:57:10-06:00

The primary service area is Monument, Tri-Lakes, and North Colorado Springs, with regular work in Castle Rock and Parker. For clients outside that area, it is worth reaching out. Depending on the project scope and timing, travel may be available for larger staging installs or design board work.

What does a background in color theory actually mean for the quality of service?2026-05-22T13:57:32-06:00

Color selection is approached through the lens of light, existing finishes, furniture tones, and how rooms connect to each other. It is a structured process, not personal preference or guesswork. This means the color recommendations you receive are grounded in how color actually behaves in your specific space.

Does The Little Blue Barn work with clients moving into a new home, not just those who are selling?2026-05-22T13:57:52-06:00

Yes. A significant part of the services offered is helping people settle into a new space and make it feel intentional quickly. This is especially common in the Tri-Lakes military community, where families often need to establish a comfortable home fast. Services like room refresh, design boards, and sourcing are all well suited to move-in situations.
